For more than 20 years, Invisalign® has been among the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments available. As an established Marietta Invisalign dentist, we have helped correct orthodontic issues using this safe and reliable treatment option for patients of all ages. But while the clear aligner technology is adaptable for a range of issues, can it successfully treat underbites?

Can Invisalign Correct an Underbite?

An underbite is a type of misalignment of the teeth. An underbite occurs when the lower teeth and jaw protrude in front of the upper teeth. And while the cause will vary, it’s usually a result of a jaw misalignment – or an imbalance between the size of the upper and lower jaws.

Invisalign clear aligners have indeed proven to be effective in correcting underbites in many cases. Invisalign is most effective when treating mild to moderate issues where the teeth need to be repositioned. Before recommending the treatment, an experienced Invisalign dentist will conduct a comprehensive examination.

When Is Invisalign Not Recommended for Underbites?

As we discussed when looking at whether Invisalign can fix an overbite, there will be cases that call for an alternative measure. Dentists may advise against using clear aligners if the patient suffers from tooth decay, is dealing with a complex jaw misalignment, or when a TMJ disorder is involved. However, each case is different and first requires a thorough dental exam and consultation.

How Long Will It Take for Invisalign to Fix an Underbite?

One of Invisalign’s main benefits is the fast treatment time. While treatment times vary case-by-case, many patients will achieve underbite correction within 12 to 18 months. The timescale may be extended (or shortened) depending on the complexity of the dental issue, while noticeable improvements will occur throughout the treatment time. To prevent delays, patients must wear the clear aligners for at least 22 hours per day.

The Invisalign Process for Correcting an Underbite

One of the reasons to choose Invisalign to straighten your teeth is its personalized treatment approach. Most Invisalign treatment for underbites will follow the steps shown below.

  • An initial consultation to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for Invisalign.
  • A digital scan of the teeth is taken to create customized aligners.
  • The patient receives aligners in the mail (with new sets provided as the teeth gradually shift).
  • Patients visit their dental office for regular checkups to ensure the treatment is working.
  • After treatment ends, patients must wear a retainer to maintain the new positioning of the teeth.
